For Monday, April 25 (and perhaps part of Thursday)
We're going to continue explorig the topic, "Persistence of Race" by watching the film "Do the Right Thing" by Spike Lee.  I don't know how many have seen this film  but if you have seen it it bears seeing again.  If you haven't seen it, I think you may find it both disturbing and enjoyable.  It is 120 minutes long, so unfortunately we'll have to braek it in the middle someplace.  Below is an excerpt so you can get a sense of what we're in for.

For Thursday, April 28
Read, in Suarez,

The American Factory, Brooklyn, NY.  pp. 89 - 121
We'll hold a general discussion of this and also leftovers from the chapter on the persistance of race following the conclusion of Do the Right Rhing.  I'd like to have you visit some of the areas about which Suarez writes--he writes from personal knowledge (and some affection) because he lived in Brooklyn for many years.  Use Streetfinder to find some of the streets he mentions, and put some links in your personal journal.  I'll do the same and we can use this, the film, and the book for a general discussion of the persistance of Race as an urban issue.
