1. Relate the city which you chose to the books we read. For example, at the beginning you may want to recall Rybczynski’s City Life and his ideas about why American cities are different from European ones, and relate that to your chosen city. Then proceed to Isenberg and Jacobs and do the same thing.
2. You don’t have to use every idea from every book. Use those most interesting and pertinent to your chosen city.
3. Try to use as many illustrations as you can. Make sure you discuss the illustrations you use, and how they work to clarify the topic upon which you are working. Remember too, that the more illustrations you use, especially the larger ones, are taking up space which would have otherwise be used by your thoughts and ideas. In other words, you will need to make your paper (if a paper is your choice) longer.
4. Remember you can copy and paste screen shots from the web into your paper, or upload them to your website. You can also edit them once you’ve pasted them. I gave a demonstration in class.
5. Also remember that you can provide links to your sources from the web, whether your choice is a paper or a website. If you quote from one of our books, just use a parenthesis with the name of the author and page number enclosed.
6. Don’t forget the resource folders–the general ones, and the individual ones. You should find many useful things there–including materials on your city from City Data.
7. Review all the pages here on the class website. They point your attention to the things which we discussed across the semester.
8. Try to be as specific in your illustrations as possible–if you write about a specific place, use an illustration of that specific place, if possible.
9. Papers and Websites are due the last day of final exams. I plan on being in my office during the examination period, and I’ll be happy to discuss how things are going. I may not be in my office all the time, and I may come in late some days, as my ride will be working from 12-7 during the exam period. I’ll post announcements to Bridges when I’m on campus, and when I’m leaving.
10. After I finish reviewing and posting grades, I would like the class to be able to see everyone's work. I won't post/share without your authorization.
